Decking the Halls and Other Shenanigans

The first year decorating a new house is always a challenge.  Our house is cozier than the last, so my goal was to use many of my favorite decorations without overwhelming our space.  I'm not sure if I succeeded, but I gave it a good try : )

This clock plays music and the train moves each hour.  My older two run into the office each time it starts.

I treasure the old-timey ornaments from my grandma.  This funky tree helps me display some that would otherwise get lost on our over-filled Christmas tree.

 I love nativity scenes

A wintertime bird on her nest

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care

I thought the artwork that usually anchors the mantle was too busy with all the rest of the decorations, but I couldn't leave the wall blank b/c the previous homeowners left big holes where their tv mount had been.  I found a nativity scene online, printed it, and put it in an old frame.  It's not completely centered over the mantle, which bugs me, but it's way better than looking at holes, right?

Our centerpiece needs to be narrow since my boys are a bit boisterous at mealtime.

I love a tiered stand for displaying pieces that would otherwise clutter the countertop.  The bottom bowls hold fruit, peppermint candy corn, and tea.

An old muffin tin houses potpourri and candles.  Cranberry Chutney from Yankee Candle is my favorite holiday scent.

My boys are forever jangling these metal ornaments as they go up and down the stairs, but oh well!  We'll say it's a "holiday sound".

A friendly snowman graces our closet door.

A door bucket welcomes winter guests.

The older boys share a tree in their room.  They'd have it lit all day every day if they had their way.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Okay, okay, so this doesn't look exactly like a shamrock, but my kids liked this holiday-themed breakfast.

Antsy for Spring

I was trying to be very disciplined and wait a bit longer to introduce some spring decor.  (Why, I don't really know, except I don't want to get my hopes too high too soon here in cold Michigan!).  I just couldn't wait any longer to add some brighter colors!

A hurricane is my go-to piece for decorating.  The colors in fruit just couldn't be prettier.

If you can't read the Scrabble tiles, it says "Hope for Spring".  I thought I'd put up my Caitlin Standing Cross in preparations for Lent and Easter.

Photo Opportunity

By using the Jamestown Tray, I was able to make this photo collage in a minute.  Just place the photos under the glass and you're finished!  What a fun way to make your guest of honor feel special!

Impromptu Birthday Celebration

It's been a crazy week, but we really wanted to celebrate my mom's birthday when she visited today. My WH gear saved the day, yet again! Love the Gramercy Ribbon Plate for writing messages. Happy Birthday, Yia Yia!

My mama brought me these gorgeous sunflowers. The couldn't be more beautiful or gigantic!
(The flowers are in the Ruffled Glass Pitcher.)

I perched these "not-at-all-homemade" cupcakes in the top tier of my 3-tiered stand and tucked an Annabelle Iron Votive inside. Not a full-out birthday cake, but cute and tasty.

Summertime Dinner Party

We had some friends over for supper last night. The Mediterranean Sage Bowl showed off sliced watermelon so nicely. I made star-shaped cutouts with a cookie cutter and attached them to a piece of rind with toothpicks for a fun touch.

(This bowl will be available again in Fall 2011 at www.katewood.willowhouse.com)

When the Gramercy Beverage Serving Set comes out to play, you know it's a party!

Red, White and Blue for Summer

Many versions of Old Glory in my mom's house

Centerpiece

Fun table display. As always, you rock, Mama!

Final version of church decor for Memorial Day. Bruce from HBC did the crosses in the background.

Welcome, Summer!

I am not one to futz (sp?) around the house redecorating all the time. I'd say that the whim to change things up hits me every few weeks (or less). The warm weather and the wonderful Memorial Day weekend inspired me to make my family room more summery (and patriotic). My husband was in the Air Force for almost 10 years, so in a way, it's a bit of a tribute to him.

I used an Amira Luminary to hold my flags in place and the pedestal to add height.

A flag given to us by our brother-in-law who flew it in a Huey over Iraq. It's flanked by two Bradshaw Lattice Lanterns.

Wait a minute! How'd we end up in the kitchen?!
I just wanted to show you my new decorative knobs. We have four cupboards with glass fronts, so instead of redoing all the kitchen knobs, I opted to add decorative knobs on just those four. Me likey.

Sunny Weather Deck Party

Warning! Preview picture always shows me in some awkward part of my speaking, like this one with my eyes closed. Thank you, preview window, for making me look like a dork! : )

Mama's Easter House

Forsythia

If you look around her house, there are little nests hidden in unexpected places.

Love the French Wire Tiered Stand and the Gramercy Ribbon Plate. Hidden under the bunny is the Jamestown Tray too. What a beautiful centerpiece!

Birds and Bunnies

The yellow really pops against the pewter!

My mom has such great ideas for decorating. I couldn't resist taking some pictures while I was there this weekend. Happy Easter!

Fun Ideas for Serving Food

A "candy bar" for a Sunday School gathering.
The Stiletto Pedestals are so cool for displaying colorful candy.

An Entertaining Bucket atop a beautiful Iron Stand makes a statement while keeping beverages cool for special occasions.

My friend Christy made a welcoming display for a Mommy and Me play date.
I thought it looked so nice and welcoming!

Use our Napa Tray to corral dishes for your buffet
(Thanks Christy for the pic!)

Add lots of levels for a fun ladies' tea. I love the Double Dish Stand for serving goodies. I also used the top portion of my Red Mountain Iron Entertaining Stand and placed it upside down to hold my sugar and milk (pictured on the left).

Add a pedestal for height

Use the French Wire 3-Tiered Stand for a triple-threat!
I used it here to serve cupcakes and chocolate.

I used these candle holders at Christmastime to hold brightly-colored candy.

Serving pretzel rods out of a tall, narrow container adds height and interest even at snack time.
(Featuring the Villa Stoneware Salad Plate, the Gramercy Ribbon Plate, and an Ingleside Luminary.) See, I can serve healthy snacks too!

Adding color, height, and a touch of the unexpected can really punch up your table or buffet. You know you're cooking is fabulous, so why not take an extra few seconds to really make your table pop with these fun ideas?
